The most memorable development stages of the Muuga container terminal in the Port of Muuga. (1992 – 2007)


1. november 1992
1st November 1992 first agreements with Port of Tallinn were signed: lease and cooperation agreements;
May 1993
first, and as for today, the longest stevedore contract with the ESCO was signed
12th and 13th of October 1993
first two contracts were signed with companies SISU and Valmet on delivery of portal truck and reach-stacker
March 1994
portal truck and reach-stacker arrived at the terminal
13th of October 1994
new contract with SISU on delivery of additional handling equipment was signed
17th of October 1994
first container line were opened: Tallinn – Rotterdam, Muuga Line (the line was operating for one year)
28th of June 1995
first leading container-vessel of Muuga type of Estonian Shipping Company beginning its regular services at the terminal
August 1995
new quay Nr. 14 is in operation
August 1995
Viking Line began its services through the terminal (cooperative work during the next two and a half years)
September 1995
beginning of production complex construction
July 1996
delivery of the new production complex
September 1997
delivery of the second passport-control gate for handling of Ro-Ro vessels of Silja Line company (cooperative work during one year)
4th of November 1997
first call of the new Ro-Ro type vessel Lehola of Estonian Shipping Company
20th of June 1998
stevedore contract with the company OOCL was signed (in 1999 calls to the terminal has been suspended)
1st of September 1998
stevedore contract with the company UniFeeder was signed
February 1999
the contract on delivery of the mobile crane LHM-250 by Liebherr was signed
30th of April 1999
crane was delivered for assembly
10th of May 1999
the assembly was finished
January - December 2000
construction of the new quay Nr.16 (customer – Port of Tallinn Ltd) and storage area for containers (customer – Muuga CT Ltd). First stage of the construction of the new container terminal in the Port of Muuga had begun.
January 2000
stevedore contract between Ferry Terminal Ltd and Maersk was signed
June 2000
contract between Muuga CT and Kalmar on delivery new handling equipment was signed
18th of September 2000
new contract on delivery of the mobile crane LHM-400 was signed
October – November 2000
the storage area of the first stage of the container terminal was delivered
December 2000
the assembly of the new crane was finished and new quay Nr.16 was delivered.
March 2001
stevedore contracts with ESF and CGM companies were signed (the calls were temporary suspended in 2001)
June 2001
MSC had began the working through the terminal
23 May 2001
the official opening of the new container terminal
August 2001
Ro-Ro line Mann Lines switched-over to the port of Muuga and began the service through the terminal (cooperative work during the 15 months)
December 2001
legal and organisation formalities of integration of the Ferry Terminal Ltd and Muuga CT Ltd were completed
Summer 2002
increasing of the storage area for container storage by two additional hectares
December 2002
the record cargo turnover of the company. The terminal handled 1,62 mln tonnes of cargo, including more than 87,000 TEU of containers
February 2003
stevedore contract with Team Lines was signed
17th of April 2003
first call of the Alteland vessel of the Team Lines company
7th of May 2003
contract with Kone on delivery of the STS gantry crane was signed
June 2003
first stage of the construction of the covered warehouse had been started
September 2003
the construction of the warehouse was finished
September 2003
the calls to the terminal by the vessels of OOCL was renewed
14 October 2003
stevedore contract with Freselle company was signed
28 October 2003
company holds negotiations with CGM about the renewal of calls to the terminal

Delivery of the new Ship-to-Shore (STS) gantry crane by Kone

The Start-up of the first STS Gantry crane

The building of mechanical workshop.
 16 July 2004
 Muuga CT handled 500 000th TEU
 December 2004
The development program of Muuga CT for 2005-2015 was accepted by the shareholders and forwarded to the Port of Tallinn authorities;

First time in the history of MCT it handled 100 000 TEU in one year.
 30 September 2005
MSC Adriana with capacity 1 730 TEU was handled at MCT, it was the biggest vessel handled so far.

Two first Shuttle-Carriers started to work
 May-June 2006
Two first RTG cranes started to work on quay Nr.14
 21 July 2006
Second STS Gantry crane started to work
 21 August 2006
The beginning of operation of new technological scheme RTG-SC
 28 June 2007
Third RTG crane started operating
 3 August 2007
Two additional Shuttle Carriers by Kalmar and personnel lift platform for maintenance of handling equipment were put in operation.

Contract on delivering the first RMG crane was signed with Konecranes.

The expansion of railway park had begun
